IB is in full swing at St. Paul’s. The students in each class have a unit of inquiry that they are exploring. Below is a brief description of each of the current units of inquiry.

It’s All In the Family ~ We belong to a family and our families are special to us.
Three-year-olds are learning about who is in their family and the roles the different members play. They are also thinking about what families do together. |

A Star is Born ~ I am special and I change as I learn and grow.
The PreK students are exploring their social, emotional, and physical capabilities, learning how they can interact with others, how they feel about themselves, and what their bodies can do. |

Let There Be Peace ~ Interactions between people affect the world around them.
Kindergarteners are exploring a brand new unit. They are exploring ways we interact with one another, how to make responsible choices, and how to maintain peace even through differences. |

What is Important? ~ Individual differences shape our values.
The students in first grade are also exploring a new unit. This unit focuses on the idea that who we are affects what we like. They will be looking at things they value and thinking about what others might value being different. They will also think about balancing activities in the choices they make. |

It Takes a Village ~ Living things form communities to meet the needs and wants of individuals.
Second graders are discussing the difference between needs and wants and looking at what factors might determine a person’s “wants.” They will then begin looking at ways communities serve to meet our needs and wants. |

Health U ~ A healthy lifestyle consists of a balance of nutrition, physical activity, and rest.
In third grade, students have been learning about the food pyramid and how to maintain a balanced diet. They will also study the effects of physical exercise and how people rest or relax. |

River of Life ~ Water affects the inhabitants of earth as it cycles through nature and man-made systems.
Fourth grade students have learned about the water cycle and will now be looking at global issues surrounding water and ways that humans try to care for water. |

Power of the People ~ Humans have developed governmental systems to provide organization, common services, and protection for societies.
Fifth graders are learning about the formation of the United States government. They will learn about its structure and function and make comparisons to the governments of other countries. |

Nature or Nurture ~ Cultural traditions and genetics influence the people we become.
In sixth grade, students are studying what it means to be human. They are exploring various rites of passage that people experience and learning about how we are genetically structured. They will then look at how humans respond to these influencing factors. |
