Class Information

Overall View of Academics

Language Arts ~ The fifth grade class continues the focus on writing begun in fourth grade, putting a special emphasis on creative writing. They also work to develop important grammar and spelling skills that will enable them to become better writers. Students read many novels throughout the year.

Math ~ Everyday Mathematics encourages students to use a variety of strategies to solve problems and to understand the concept behind why math works. Fifth graders study factors, estimation, geometry, division, fractions, decimals, and percents, exponents, area and volume, probability, and simple algebra concepts.

Social Studies ~ Fifth graders study the second half of American History, beginning with the writing of our Constitution. Through use of the newspaper and magazines such as Time for Kids, connections to present day are made as often as possible.

Science ~ Science is an important component of the fifth grade year. Many concepts are covered in the IB units including body systems, matter, energy and ecology. In the spring semester, students work through the scientific research process, then prepare and present an individual scientific experiment for our annual science fair.
