Overall View of Academics
Language Arts ~ The focus in fourth grade is on writing with grammar and spelling instruction. Students also read content-related stories and novels. Cursive handwriting is solidified with practice during the fall semester.
Math ~ Everyday Mathematics encourages students to use a variety of strategies to solve problems and to understand the concept behind why math works. Fourth graders study geometry, place value, multiplication & division, decimals, fractions, percents, estimation, perimeter & area, and rates.
Social Studies ~ Fourth graders focus on North America from Pre-History through the forming of the United States of America. Through use of the newspaper and magazines such as Time for Kids, connections to present day are made as often as possible.
Science ~ Many exciting scientific topics are studied including rocks & minerals, weather, electricity, magnets, natural disasters, and ecosystems.
IB Units of Inquiry
River of Life ~ Water affects the inhabitants of earth as it cycles through nature and man-made systems.
On the Move ~ People and animals migrate in search of a new way of life.
Rock my World ~ Physical forces that shape the earth.
Out of Bounds ~ Boundaries structure a way of life for both individuals and communities.
A Call to Arms ~ Through persuasion, people attempt to convince an audience to share their point of view.
Laying Down the Law ~ Citizens have roles, rights, and responsibilities in their communities.
Special Trip
Camp Allen ~ At the end of September, the fourth and fifth graders enjoy a 3 day trip filled with fun, team-building activities.
A Few Extras
Athletics ~ Fourth graders have the opportunity to join our athletic teams in volleyball, football, and basketball.
Chapel Leaders ~ On Monday mornings, the fourth graders take on leadership roles in our bi-weekly chapel service. Every other month, they share this role with the fifth graders.
Book Buddies ~ Fourth graders get together with the pre-kindergarteners about once a month to read together.
