Weekly Learning Experiences

 Math

Unit 12: Rates – Rates, ratios, and proportional thinking are very common in our everyday world, and there is probably no better indication of good “number sense” and “measure sense” than the ability to handle such problems with ease.  Unfortuantely for many people, everyday uses of rates seem to be among the most difficult aspects of mathematics.  Many of the reports of poor achievement in math are based on failures with rate or ratio problems on inventory test, or with proportional thinking in the workplace.  We will focus on understanding rates in repeated exposure to the many uses of rates in everyday life.  Students will learn many different concepts of rates and will augment throughout our last unit.  A unit assessment will be given next week, along with some review and the very last week of school we will take an end of the year assessment over all the concepts we have studied throughout 4th grade.

Language Arts - Daily Oral Language Practice – reviewing the eight parts of speech and correcting sentences; Expository writing; Study skills will be implemented these last couple of weeks including: using an Encyclopedia, more prefixes and suffixes, and outlining a composition to organize our topic of choice.

Reading:  Novel -   Shiloh:  Keep reading!

Spelling Unit 34:  Students will bring home a packet with activities that vary week to week, including spelling and vocabulary, word structure and dictionary skills, solving analogies, completing the sentences, and other activities that support the weekly list.

IB Unit of Inquiry – Laying Down the Law!

Other Science and Social Studies – We will finish our studies on Biomes with our dioramas this Friday.  We will also start our last unit of science with the study of electricity and magnetism.

Geography  Students will focus on how the physical environment is modified by human activities, largely as a consequence of the ways in which human societies value and use Earth’s natural resources.   A packet will be coming home on Monday.

Art  The students will be learning to draw shapes three-dimensionally. If you have an interesting shaped jar or bottle that we could use in a still-life, please send it. If you would like you bottle back, please put your name on the bottom of the object.

Music  -

PE  Monday we will play Dinosaur tag.  This tag game is very good for our Cardio-respiratory fitness. Tuesday we will play Ultimate Pin Guard, which is very good for our throwing and aiming.  Wednesday we will be doing a Chicken relay which will be working the muscles in our core.  Thursday will be our exercise day and Friday will be our free day.
