Extra Help for Your Child

With report cards coming home this week, I am sensing an anxiousness, maybe even bordering on panic, from some parents concerning the need for tutoring in certain areas for their child or children.  Let me say first of all that very few of our students actually need tutoring in the traditional sense.  Those who do have probably been identified previously and we have been working in partnership with parents and tutors to do what is best for them.  Extra help in any academic area starts first with the classroom teacher. Always seek extra help from them first.  They are all here by 7:45 in the morning and most stay late after school.  A second option is to find a current teacher at St. Paul’s who understands our curriculum and ask for their help.  I should say here that your child’s current teacher cannot be paid to tutor students in their own class, but other teachers can be paid whatever their normal rate is to tutor in various areas.  As a final option, you can seek help from someone outside the school.  It is imperative that they are familiar with what we are teaching and that they are willing and able to follow that curriculum in their teaching.  Don’t panic if your child appears to be struggling.  Make an appointment to speak with the teacher, look at strategies that can be used at home and at school, and take a deep breath!  If we work as partners we can figure out what is best for your child.

IB in Action

Attitude of the Week ~ Commitment
~ To work hard and show self-discipline and responsibility ~

This Friday, we will have some visitors from Grace School in Houston. They are considering becoming an IB school and will be visiting St. Paul's to see IB in action!

2nd Grade ~ 2nd graders are well into their unit on children around the world. They have heard from Dr. George about life in India and from Mrs. Huff (the sixth grade teacher) about her many travel adventures, including some interesting delicacies she has eaten. This week, they will hear from Elizabeth Smith (school board member), who has traveled many places as well. She will speak about her time in Kenya. Students are also researching about a specific country, learning about the culture there and how it compares to ours. They are focusing on the key concepts of Form (what it is like), connection (how it is similar and different to us), and perspective (their opinion about the country).

3rd Grade ~ "Patent This!" is the title of the third graders current unit. They have investigated the lives of inventors (Form) and looked at how inventions have improved the quality of life (Function) and how they have changed over time (Change). They are now working on the final project of this unit, designing their own invention. Their inventions will used mostly recycled materials and must help to improve someone's life. The third graders will share their inventions in a museum this Friday morning.
