Grandparent and Special Friends Day A Day for the Ages
What a great day at St. Paul’s on Friday, October 5th. We had a fantastic turn-out from our grandparents and special friends as our children entertained them in the Parish Hall and in their classrooms. Our newly-elected Mayor of St. Paul’s City, Alexandra Deaver, read a proclamation declaring October 5th as “Grandparent and Special Friends Day” in St. Paul's City. I was amazed by the number of young grandparents we have – I guess I really am getting older! I want to thank all our children for making our guests feel welcome. I also want to thank our faculty and staff, especially Claudette Basden for the tireless efforts in getting the program ready. Rose Berryman and her “staff” prepared wonderful snacks for the day and our Parents and Friends representatives, led by Lori Becker, helped to ensure one of the largest turn-outs in a very long time. Finally, please thank Leah Delafield for her “behind the scenes” work in organizing the day. I heard many comments as folks were leaving about how organized it all was. We have two more “BIG” all-school events this month. Please attend the Auction on October 26th at Ridgewood Country Club and Episcopal School Sunday at the 9:00 service on Sunday, October 28th. Thank you for all you do to make this the best school is Waco!

IB in Action
Fourth grade - The Fourth Grade kicked off its first IB unit, a unit on natural disasters, with an unexpected fire drill. Fourth grade students observed the reactions of other students and teachers. As a class, they made recommendations on how to make the fire drill more successful. The students asked and recorded questions. They have spent a great deal of time talking about the weather and have recorded it on a weekly basis. They are now moving forward and researching volcanoes, earthquakes, blizzards, hurricanes, tsunami, and avalanches. Each student will prepare a science experiment and present it to the class.
Three Year Olds - The three-year-olds just completed their IB unit, "It's All in the Family." The central idea was "We belong to a family and our families are special to us." The students brought in family pictures to put on the bulletin board and created art that showed the reasons they love their family. Please stop by the classroom door to see these precious images! The class graphed how many members each child has in his/her family. Students also practiced how to take care of a baby and learned other household duties in our home-living center. Our big project was to have the students create a family book. All the children created their own books with family photos and then presented their books to their classmates during our morning meeting. The excitement of the children in sharing their family books and telling their classmates what makes their parents and grandparents special definitely showed the IB profile of caring!
