No Heat at St. Paul's

At the most inopportune time, we have lost both heating units for the school.  They are over 30 years old, so it was probably time to go. The church has graciously stepped in and agreed to fund the replacement of the units, at a very significant cost.  Please join me in thanking the church for their generosity.  We do not know at this time how long the replacement will take but be assured that we are working on getting everything completed as soon as possible.  It is not as simple as replacing a home-heating unit, as you can imagine.  In the meantime, children are encouraged to bring a sweater or light jacket/sweatshirt to leave at school for cold days.  They are allowed to wear any kind of outerwear in the classroom until the heat is fixed and then we will return to St. Paul’s outerwear only after that.  Thank you for your support of our amazing school.

IB in Action

IB Parent Night ~ Please plan to join us for the first IB Parents Night next Tuesday from 6:30 to 7:30 in the Parish Hall. Parents & Friends will sponsor the evening by providing desserts and giving us an update on their recent and upcoming activities. In January, our school will begin an advertising campaign that tells Waco, "Ask Me About IB." This interactive evening is designed for you to experience IB for yourself and to walk away with several key points about IB that you can share with your family and friends. Childcare will be provided, but please e-mail Yvonne by Monday afternoon to reserve a spot for your child or children.

Sibling Enrollment

We have already had many visitors to St. Paul's inquiring about next year. Our two year old class is filling up quickly. We want to make sure to give preferential treatment to siblings of currently enrolled students. If you are planning on enrolling a younger sibling in any of our classes next year, please come by the office to pick up an application or e-mail Leah Delafield (ldelafield@stpaulsschoolwaco.com) and we will send an application home with your student. A submitted application will guarantee your child a spot in one of these classes next year.

Literary Day at Barnes & Noble

Special thanks to all who helped with the fabulous literary event at Barnes & Noble. It was exciting to see so many St. Paul's faces there supporting in one way or another. Co-chairs Denise McClinton, Merryl Jones, and Kori Dorton put on a fabulous event together with the help of many of our Parents & Friends volunteers. Thanks again for your support of St. Paul's School.

Look What's Happening in Pre-K

Welcome to the magical world of the Quirkles in Pre-Kindergarten!  With increasing attention to the innovative science in classrooms, the Quirkles offers a fresh new way to integrate literacy and science. The Quirkles stories are a series of alphabet books that teach and reinforce phonetic sounds that serve as the building blocks for reading, while also making science (earth, physical, and life) fun to learn. This program has created enthusiasm and excitement for reading and science through whimsical illustrations, fun alliteration of the specified letter and hands-on science.

In a galaxy far, far away named Quirk, there live the Quirkles. The Quirkles are unique little scientists who have vivid imaginations. They love to do experiments and visit our classroom each week. One day, the king of Quirk called all the Quirks together and asked them to travel to a new land called Boresville (St. Paul’s Pre-Kindergarten’s Classroom) to share their discoveries with the creatures that lived there. The creatures of Boresville needed help! They lacked imagination and knowledge.

Off the Quirkles went. The Creatures were so excited with their twenty-six new friends. They changed the name of their land to Quirksville to honor them. And thus began many new adventures for the Quirkles and their friends. A few of our friends names are “Acid Andy”, “Botantist Bert”, “Colorful Caroline”, “Density Dan” and “Friction Fred”.

The book “Density Dan” is a story about a dog named Dipsy Dog who can not float in the lake. Dipsy Dog’s friend, Density Dan helps Dipsy Dog solve his problem. The story goes into what kind of friend Density Dan is to Dipsy Dog as well as explaining how ocean water is different from lake water. As we read this book to the children, the children listen for words beginning with the /d/ sound.

After we read the book each week, we do an experiment that goes along with the book. The experiment we did with “Density Dan” was the floating egg experiment, to teach the children that salt water is denser than fresh water. The children were able to practice this skill by observing how an egg can float in salt water. The children learned the egg floats in the salt water because the egg is not as heavy or dense as the salty water.  The egg in the fresh water sinks because it is heavier than the water.

Please ask any of our Pre-Kindergarten friends about our Quirkle friends and they will be glad to share with you the exciting adventures and discoveries that they have made this year. IT HAS BEEN MAGICAL!
