IB in Action

Taking Action at the ages of 6 and 7 ~ The first grade class is studying materials and recycling and in a classroom conversation, a student brought up that restaurants use a lot of materials that could be recycled and they wondered how many restaurants do recycle their materials. Our students wanted to encourage restaurants to do that, so they decided to partner with Vitek’s Bar-B-Q and place recycling bins there for people to recycle their glass, plastic, and aluminum. Thursday, they went to Vitek’s to look through the restaurant to find items that could be recycled and they placed three bins by the picnic tables in the back. The bins have facts about each item, including the amount of time it takes for a specific material to biodegrade. The students will take turns collecting the recycling through the end of the school year. What a great example of student-initiated action!
