PreK Expands

If you have a Pre Kindergarten student, you already know what an exciting year it has been in the Pre K program.  We opened enrollment to allow two sections of Pre K this year in an effort to continue to grow our school from the bottom up.  We currently have 26 students in Pre K divided into two groups of 13, in order to provide much more individualized attention than one large class would offer. They are labeled the Red and Blue group simply so that we can keep track of who is going where throughout the day.  They have an active schedule that takes each group separately to art, music, PE, library, technology, Christian Education, and Spanish throughout the week.  The real beauty of the system as it is currently designed is that every single student has two wonderful teachers at all times that they are in the classroom.  Both Melisa Bennett and Susan Cleveland are in the classroom all day.  Gazala Siddiq travels with the classes wherever they go, allowing the teachers to remain with the kids. At lunch, several of our students leave, and all of the students who stay all day become one class for afternoon activities. It is a wonderful system that is working like clockwork. I hope you will stop by some time to visit the classroom and see all of the exciting things happening there.

Auction Class Photos

It is a tradition each year to take a class picture in the theme of the auction and auction it off at the St. Paul's auction. This year, we will take the pictures on Wednesday, October 3. The theme of the auction is "Blasting into the Future...The Next Generation of Leaders." For the class pictures this year, we'd like the students to dress as a profession they'd like to be when they grow up. We'd love to see doctors, fire fighters, police, teachers, astronauts, scientists, etc. If you have some extra items we'd appreciate having them available for students who forget. Please bring them to the school by Monday, so we can inventory what we have. These pictures are always a fun item to bid on, so get creative!

Parking Problems

We are still seeing several cars parked in the drive-through area by the cow. Please remember to park in the church parking lot if you are planning to get out of your car with your child. Thanks for your help in keeping our children safe.

IB in Action

We'd like to highlight a few classes and their work with IB already this year.

Sixth grade - "Your Ad Here" is the sixth graders first IB unit. This unit is all about advertising. The students began the unit with a trip to the Free Enterprise Institute (part of the Dr. Pepper museum). There they learned the history of advertising, and created their own soda, as well as a small ad campaign for their new drink. Jeffrey Miller, a St. Paul's dad, who works for the Baylor athletics marketing department came and spoke to the class about his job and what he does to promote Baylor athletics. The sixth graders will use all of this information to create an ad campaign for a downtown business. Small groups of students selected businesses such as the Palladium, the Hippodrome, It's Personal, Spice, and Crickets. They went and personally interviewed the owners of these businesses to find out the advertising needs of their businesses. They are now working to design logos, slogans, and print ad campaigns for these businesses.

Third grade - What makes a healthy lifestyle? The third graders are studying a unit called "Health Smarts" in order to find out. As the first unit, one of the main goals of this unit is for the students to become accustomed to asking questions that will help them understand their topic better. The students have asked many questions, and at the end of last week, they worked to narrow them down to the questions that would best help them learn more. They have looked closely at nutrition labels and next week, they will take a field trip to HEB to learn more about this important topic. As part of this unit, students will design a plan of healthy living, including eating, exercise, and rest habits.

Kinder - Currently the kindergarten class is working on the IB unit entitled "My School House is My School Home." The children, as a class, have read many books about children going to school all around the world and how schools are alike and different. Also, as a class, the students came up with questions to ask the teachers and staff of our school. The children have now been interviewing and taking pictures of the St. Paul's staff. They will soon be making a classroom book using all of the information they discovered during their interviews.
