Overall View of Academics
Language Arts ~ Second graders work on writing and punctuating sentences correctly. They use this knowledge to write in many different styles of writing using a specified writing process. Students also learn many important spelling patterns. Reading, through short stories and novels, focuses on comprehension of the content as well as the correct pronunciation of words.
Handwriting ~ In second grade, students are introduced to the formation of cursive handwriting through our handwriting curriculum, Handwriting Without Tears.
Math ~ Everyday Mathematics encourages students to use a variety of strategies to solve problems and to understand the concept behind why math works. Second graders spend time reviewing money and time, work on double digit addition and subtraction, measurement, and learn the basis for multiplication and division. They also learn about fractions and equivalent fractions.
Social Studies ~ Second graders focus on communities and how and why the facets of those communities work together. They study health, economics, signs, and leaders.
Science ~ Second graders study nutrition, plants, landforms, sound, simple chemistry, adaptation and survival.

It Takes a Village ~ A healthy lifestyle consists of a balance of nutrition, physical activity, and rest.
Around the World in 30 Days ~ People have developed maps and globes to represent the various geographical features of the earth.
I Saw the Sign ~ Signs and symbols communicate a message.
Show Me the Money ~ The demand of consumers affects the supply of goods and services.
Survivor ~ Living things adapt to interact with their environment.
Impact Your World ~ Events throughout a person’s life influence the impact they have on the world.
A Few Extras
St. Paul’s Entertainment Committee ~ Once per semester the second graders host an all-school event. Past events have included a movie day, an arcade, and a market.
Book Buddies ~ Second graders get together with the two-year-olds about once a month to read together.
