Class Information

Overall View of Academics

Language Arts ~ Sixth graders are expected to master grammatical concepts including parts of speech and correct usage. They will learn parts of sentences and structure. Novels make thematic connections to IB unit themes.  Students write in every content area. In the fall semester, sixth grade students will write their own children’s book. 

Math ~ Everyday Mathematics encourages students to use a variety of strategies to solve problems and to understand the concept behind why math works. Sixth graders study data analysis and display, fractions and decimals, geometry, and pre-algebra concepts. They are also introduced to Microsoft Excel in connection with their math lessons.

Social Studies ~ Sixth graders study world geography and world history. Through the use of the newspaper and magazines such as Time for Kids, connections to present day are made.

Science ~ Many exciting scientific topics are explored including the universe, chemistry, natural resources, simple machines, classification of living things, and genetics.

Research ~ Research skills are practiced throughout sixth grade and culminate in the PYP Exhibition project.

IB Units of Inquiry

Nature or Nurture ~ Cultural traditions and genetics influence our transition from on stage of life to another.

Starting From Scratch ~ Civilizations use the resources available to structure a way of life.

It’s Classified~ Systems are established to maintain organization and promote understanding.

Use it or Lose it~ Working together helps people share finite resources.

Crisis Mode ~ Our response to world issues has implications for the future.

Pop Culture ~ PYP exhibition unit designed by the students.

Special Trips

Mo Ranch ~ The sixth grade class spends four days and three nights at Mo Ranch, participating in the Environmental Leadership Program. They learn about nature, build teamwork, and take on the challenge of high rope elements.

Washington, D.C. ~ Students may choose to go on a four-day, three-night tour of Washington, D.C. Fundraisers help offset the cost.

A Few Extras

Athletics ~ Sixth graders lead our athletic teams in volleyball, football, and basketball.

KSPW Radio Staff ~ Each afternoon, members of the sixth grade class run KSPW – The voice of St. Paul’s city. Radio announcers give the afternoon announcements along with interesting information.

Chapel Leaders ~ Every Wednesday morning, the sixth graders take on leadership roles in our bi-weekly chapel service.

Book Buddies ~ Sixth graders get together with the first graders about once a month to read together.
