This Week’s Focus

Unit: 

We will be doing a unit on Spring and Easter the first couple of weeks in April!  We will talk about why we celebrate Easter.  We will go over the story of Easter and roll away the tomb.  We will make fun crafts such as eggs in grass, a bunny, a baby chick, a cross, a lily flower, a tulip, a lamb, a lion, and a palm leaf.  We will play rabbit bingo.  In math, we will do felt counting with bunnies.  We will graph our favorite jelly bean.  We will play an Easter counting game, and a counting game where we plant carrots for a rabbit.  We will also sing fun songs.  We will also be talking about spring and what we do in the spring, what the weather is like, and that things grow and bloom.  This month we will also start a unit on Dinosaurs!  We will talk about the different types of dinosaurs.  We will talk about what a paleontologistis and we will get a chance to be one.  We will dig up dinosaur bones.  We will look at the actual size of a dinosaur foot.  We will make dinosaur crafts.  We will do sequencing with dinosaur stories.  We will play dino bingo and do dinosaur counting games and patterning.  We will continue to practice writing our names, letters and numbers.  We will learn rhyming words.   In math, we will be working on counting, patterns, objects by size, basic addition, counting backwards, sorting and graphing.

Letter:

 We will review all the letters in the alphabet.  We will continue to review the letters L, F, E, T, I, U, C, O, Q, G, S, J, D, P, B, R, K, W,X, A, M, N, Y, Z and H.

Number:
We will review numbers 1-10.  We will also start looking at numbers 11-15.

Color: We will review all colors.

Shape:  We will review all shapes and start learning the octagon and hexagon.

IB Unit of Inquiry
Our ongoing unit of inquiry is, “Celebrate!”

Centers

Home Living: dramatic play with dress up clothes, dolls, and kitchen equipment

Play Doh: tools and play dohfor original creations and practice with cut outs for current theme, shape of the week, etc.

Transportation: cars, trucks and airplanes for dramatic play

Library: pillows to relax on and plenty of just-for-fun and theme books to look at and read

Puzzles: some just for fun and some thematic, others for practice in language and math skills

Teacher:  teacher-directed activity with one student or a small group for deeper instruction and assessment

Construction: creative building and cognitive and spatial development in tall and small ways with Legos, Lincoln logs, space links, and foam blocks

Math: manipulatives for practice with sorting, patterning, counting, matching, numbers and other math skills

Painting: art on an easel or at the tables with tempura and water colors, sometimes free draw and sometimes structured

Barn: dramatic play with a barn and animals

Dollhouse: dramatic play with dollhouse and figures

Art

The students will draw a self-portrait which will be saved until the end of the year at which time they will draw another self-portrait. These drawings will be saved in their cumulative portfolio. Activities in art for this age child may only look like scribbles, but these scribbles are a very important step in creative and academic development.  The students also have an art center where they are able to free draw and glue the shapes of the week.  We also are working on our cutting skills.  We are developing our fine motor skills.  We do several crafts a week that go with our unit.

Music

The children will continue to work on movement.  They will be learning the song “Five Little Monkeys” and and acting it out.

Physical Education

This week the children will be playing tag games to work on cardio-respiratory fitness.

Spanish

  We will continue to review the words “hello” and “goodbye” through a fun song.  We also will review the words ”thank you,” “you’re welcome,” and ”friend.”  We will review our colors and shapes.  We will review good morning and good evening.  We will start learning how to say my name is  ___, and what is your name?

We are also reviewing the sign language that we have learned, such as, water, please, sit, thank you, restroom, and the letters.
